Sustaining yields

Echo sounder

Fishing boats often use an echo sounder to detect fish. An echo sounder can also determine the water depth by measuring the time interval required for a sonic wave to travel from a ship to the sea bed and back.

Malaysian fisheries are characterized by small-scale harvests of multiple species, using a variety of fishing gear. Fishing has traditionally been concentrated in inshore areas, but since the mid-1980s the government has been trying to develop offshore areas. The fishing industry is being carefully managed by the Department of Fisheries to sustain yields that are now valued at around RM2.7 billion per annum. Complications arise, however, because controlling measures applying to only one species cannot be applied to the Malaysian multi-species fisheries.
