Sundaland

Earthquakes and volcanic activity

Sundaland is a geographical region comprising land areas of Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, Java, all the smaller islands and shallow seas around these places, as well as the undersea area known as the Sunda Shelf. During the Pleistocene period from 1.6 million to about 10,000 years ago, the sea level was 100 metres below its present level and Sundaland was an extensive landmass. Subsequent rising sea levels have resulted in the separate islands and land formations present today.
