Squid, cuttlefish and octopuses

Samsudin bin Basir

Squid

A squid swimming in its unusual position. It propels itself by expelling water from its tunnel.

Many species of squid, cuttlefish and octopuses inhabit the shallow seas around Malaysia. They are molluscs belonging to the class Cephalopoda, and have internal skeletal rods instead of shells for support. They vary greatly in length (8–35 cm). Most squid and octopuses inhabit the shallow seas around the continental shelf, while cuttlefish live nearer the coast. Mainly a by-catch of fish and prawn trawlers, these cephalopods constitute around 5 per cent of the annual commercial marine landings in Malaysia and are popular in local cuisine and as dried food products.
