Sea turtles
Malaysian beaches provide nesting habitats for four of the seven species of sea turtles in the world. Although sea turtles have existed for over 100 million years, their existence today is seriously threatened because of decades of egg exploitation, incidental capture in fishing gear, coastal and tourism development on nesting beaches, marine pollution, and from the direct hunting of turtles for their meat and other products such as shells. Conservation measures have been intensified, but much more needs to be done to prevent sea turtles from becoming extinct.
