Seashells

Gregory Ong Leng Gin

Seashells are the cast-off coverings of soft-bodied animals known as molluscs (see 'Molluscs') which themselves are often referred to as 'seashells'. Since prehistoric times, the beauty and variety of seashells have enticed people to collect and use them for commercial purposes and adornment. Although a large variety of seashells is found in Malaysia, some species are becoming endangered because of over-collection. Therefore, shell collecting is now prohibited in Malaysian marine parks.
