Salts in the sea

Law Ah Theem

Comparison

A comparison of the concentrations of salts.

Salts in the sea come from various sources, including the recycling of organisms and from being washed into the seas by rivers carrying sediments. In Malaysia, deforestation over the past two decades has resulted in greater amount of sediments, and thus minerals, being deposited in the seas. On average, sea water contains 96.5 per cent pure water and 3.5 per cent salts. However, the addition of rain or river water affects salinity in specific locations. Minerals play a vital role in the biological and chemical processes of all living organisms in the sea.
