Prawns
The giant tiger prawn (Peneaus monodon), known locally as udang harimau, is the largest known penaeoid species, reaching the length of 35 centimetres.
Prawns or large shrimps are decapods, crustaceans which, along with crabs, lobsters and crayfish, have five pairs of walking legs. The two main groups of prawns, the Penaeoidea and the Caridea, are both found in Malaysia, with the majority being penaeoid prawns. Around 80,000 tons of marine prawns are captured annually in Malaysian waters, making a small but significant percentage of the total fisheries catch. Both marine and freshwater prawns are cultivated commercially as well, since demand for Malaysian prawns is high, both locally and abroad.
