For many centuries, marine organisms have been recognized as sources of chemical compounds with medicinal properties. Both sea cucumber and sea horse extract have long been used in Malay and Chinese traditional medicine. Since less than 1 per cent of the potentially useful compounds have been screened so far, there is considerable scope for development in this field in which Malaysian scientists are actively researching and uncovering new commercial applications.
