The many seas surrounding Malaysia are important to the country as they are rich in both fisheries and non-fisheries resources. Some are also important shipping routes, with the Strait of Melaka being among the busiest in the world. This volume introduces a wealth of information on the seas so vital to the country.

The first two sections of he volume explore the physics, chemistry and geology of the seas, enabling the reader to understand better these various processes and how they affect the climate, marine environment, marine life and coastlines.

The largest section expplores the amazing variety of Malaysian marine life, ranging from plankton, seaweeds, seagrasses, starfish, sea cucumbers, hard and soft corals, molluscs, squid, cuttlefish, octopuses, seashells, worms, barnacles, crabs, prawns, fish, sea snakes, sea turtles, sea birds and sea mammals.

The next three sections concentrate on marine and coastal ecosystems, highlighting the availability of rich marine resources and examining man's exploitation of them. The final section addresses various issues involved in sustaining Malaysian seas for future generations and outlines the conservation measures being undertaken.

Over 850 full colour illustrations, including 200 specially commissioned drawings prepared under the guidance of experts in the field, complement the text, which has been written by well-known academics and marine specialists.
