Oil and gas
The petroleum industry is one of Malaysia's newest sources of maritime wealth. The first offshore oilfield, Baram, was discovered in Sarawak in 1963. Since then, other finds—oilfields off Sabah and Terengganu and gas off Sarawak and Terengganu—have made Malaysia Asia's third largest oil producer. It is the richest non-fisheries resource and contributes significantly to the nation's GDP and industrialization. The shallow waters off Malaysia make exploitation relatively easy.
