Monsoons and the seas
Typical sea surface temperature distribution in January during the northeast monsoon.
Many sea surface phenomena, such as waves and currents, result from the action of winds on the sea. As Malaysia and its surrounding seas lie within the monsoon belt, seasonal characteristics of the seas in terms of waves, currents and sea surface temperatures are largely shaped by the monsoons. Malaysia experiences two monsoons a year: the northeast monsoon, from mid-November to February, and the southwest monsoon, from mid-May to September. This phenomenon has shaped the country's development as well as its agriculture.
