Marine parks and reserves

Marine Park

A marine park is an area of the sea zoned as a sanctuary for the protection of its marine ecosystems. In Malaysia, there are five marine parks administered by the Department of Fisheries and three in Sabah administered by Sabah Parks. The main objective of such parks is to conserve and protect the corals, fish and other marine life. Conservation, especially of the coral reefs, is important to the economy because some of the commercial fish caught in the coastal waters originate from or make use of the reefs. The parks are also a major source of tourism revenue.
