The Seas/ Contents

INTRODUCTION

Ong Jin Eong and Gong Wooi Khoon

Malaysia's coastline—stretching along the Malay Peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak—bounds much of the southern part of the South China Sea, which is one of the world's most fascinating and productive seas. The country today has a 200-nautical-mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) making Malaysia's seas larger than its land territory. Thus, Malaysia is very much a maritime nation with a long history strongly shaped by its geographical position and make-up. From the myriad species which inhabit the waters and coastal habitats to the rich economic resources, Malaysia's seas are an ecosystem to be treasured and sustained.
