Integrated Coastal Management

Integrated Coastal management (ICM) has been defined by the World Bank as a 'process of governance consisting of the legal and institutional framework necessary to ensure that development and management plans for coastal areas are integrated with environmental and social goals and with the participation of those affected'. Although relatively new in Malaysia, the concept is gaining acceptance as a viable alternative to traditional methods of coastal zone management, and one that needs to become an integral part of state and national economic plans.
