Fisheries play an important role in the Malaysian economy by providing two-thirds of the animal protein requirement of the population. Many types of fishing gear are used. The two main gear groups are trawl nets, which contribute about 55 per cent of the total marine fish landings, and purse seines, which contribute about 18 per cent. The more powerful fishing boats, such as trawlers and purse seiners, operate large nets offshore, while traps and other smaller nets are normally used inshore.
