Fishing communities
As Malaysia is almost totally surrounded by seas, fishing provides a livelihood for many people living along the coast, as it has done for many centuries. Most Malaysian fishermen still use traditional gear, though some have already modernized their operations and use trawlers and other commercial boats. Life is hard; fishermen are affected by changing weather conditions, the monsoons and declining fish stocks. However, as fish is one of the cheapest sources of protein for Malaysians, the high demand ensures a ready market for their landings.
