Fish
A great number and variety (about 20,000 species) of fish live in the world's seas and oceans. Of these, 4000 species are found in Malaysia. Although different species of fish are found throughout the water column and at varying distances from the coastline, it is coral reefs that harbour the greatest diversity. Fish are the most primitive of the vertebrates (animals with backbones). Although most fish have the same basic body plan, they vary greatly in size, shape and colour and have adopted ingenious methods for survival.
