Currents

Southwest monsoon drift (northern summer)

Currents are the movements of water in the seas and oceans. There are two main types of currents: surface currents caused by winds and the rotation of the earth, and deep ocean currents caused by differences in temperature and salinity. Warm water is moved away from the equator and cold water to it by these currents. Thus, the earth's temperature is distributed and climate controlled. Coastal currents, primarily caused by tides and waves, also occur. The monsoon winds are a key factor in explaining Malaysia's circulation pattern.
