Commercial fish
Indian mackerel (Rastrellinger kanagurta) or kembung.
Of the 4000 species of fish found in Malaysian seas, about 500 are commercially important. Fish is a healthy and relatively cheap source of protein and an important part of the Malaysian diet. Malaysia has a great diversity of fish. The species are classified into two broad categories—pelagic (fish dwelling nearer the surface of the sea) and demersal (bottom-dwelling) fish—according to their distribution. The industry has a long tradition and is the livelihood of many Malaysians.
