Coastlines

Malaysia's coastline is around 4800 kilometres long. The coastline is very varied and harbours changing environments. Over thousands of years, the coastline has evolved in various places into different shapes, with protruding deltas or indented inlets, and into different types, such as rocky or sandy. On the east coast of the Peninsula, where the waves are strong, there are many sandy beaches. In Sabah, the sea level rise during the Holocene period created a highly indented coastline. Mangroves fringe many parts of the coastline, especially where rivers meet the sea.
