Aquaculture

Choo Poh Sze

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms, such as fish, prawns, shellfish and algae, in fresh water, sea water or brackish water. In Malaysia, aquaculture contributes about 10 per cent of the current total fish production, with culture from marine waters (mariculture) making up the vast majority of the total production. Among the main species cultivated are sea bass, groupers, tiger prawns, cockles and mussels. The main producing states are Perak, Penang, Kedah, Selangor and Johor on the west coast of the peninsula, and Sabah.
