The architecture of statehood

On 31 August 1957, the President of the United Malays National Organization, Tunku Abdul Rahman, proclaimed Malaysia's independence from Britain and in doing so became the first Prime Minister of an independent Federation of Malaya. To mark Merdeka (Independence), several large public buildings and monuments were commissioned to assert the independent status of the country.
