Settlement types of Sabah and Sarawak
The middle world consists of the village surrounded by sago palms, orchards and rice fields on the river banks. This territory is known as the uma.
Throughout Sabah and Sarawak, traditional settlement types are linked to both cosmological beliefs and features of the natural terrain. Mountains and sea coasts are seen to be separated by an intermediate zone of rivers, and in most indigenous cosmologies this intermediate area is considered the pre-eminent dwelling place of human beings.
