The story of schools
Before the introduction of formal education in Malaysia, children of the various ethnic groups went to vernacular schools housed mainly in modest timber structures. The building of large, prestigious schools began in the mid-19th century with the founding of English-medium schools by the British colonial government and the Christian missionaries. After Malaysia gained Independence in 1957, new schools were built in functional, standardized designs to reduce costs and to reflect the government's policy of forging national unity through education.
