Designing resorts which reflect the country's cultural heritage has been the preoccupation of architects in Malaysia since the boom in local and international tourism began in the early 1980s. Some architects have incorporated indigenous design elements into resort architecture while others have attempted to recreate the kampong setting or have tried to design buildings in response to the local, tropical climate.
