Orang Asli forest dwellings

Kit Leee

The Malay term Orang Asli means 'original people'. At least 18 distinct Orang Asli groups, comprising about 100,000 people, live on the Malay Peninsula, mostly in the forests. There are three main groups: the Negritos in the north, the Senoi mainly in the centre, and the Proto-Malays in the south. Collectively, the Orang Asli have maintained their cultural identity despite the pressures of rapid modernization. Many continue to live in traditional dwellings, though increasing numbers have moved to zinc-roofed structures on the fringes of small towns.
