There is no indication that the Portuguese or Dutch rulers of Melaka influenced the architecture of the Malaysian mosque. However, from the late 19th century, the British administrators of Malaya encouraged the building of mosques incorporating Western features, thereby introducing Western architectural styles into an already complex lineage of influences from India, China, Java and the Middle East. This lineage was further extended by the advent of Modernism in the early 20th century.
