Early Kuching

Edric Ong Liang Bin

Kuching's early development was inextricably linked with the Brooke Dynasty, which ruled Sarawak from 1841 to 1941. James Brooke was ceded territories in Sarawak (then part of the Brunei Sultanate) and given the title 'Rajah' by Sultan Omar Ali of Brunei in 1841 after he successfully helped to suppress a rebellion by the local inhabitants. Soon afterwards, the first 'White Rajah' made Kuching his headquarters and established it as a trading post.
