Hunters and gatherers
Evidence suggests that prior to around 2500 BCE, when agricultural lifestyles first appeared in Malaysia, there was a universal economy based on hunting and gathering. After this date, the hunter-gatherer lifestyle began to erode, but it never entirely vanished. The Negritos, the Punan/Penan and the Orang Laut and Bajau Laut practised a nomadic lifestyle dependent on their immediate environment for their daily sustenance. Even today, small groups of these people still live in the traditional manner.
