Entrepôts along the Melaka Strait

John Miksic

Documentary sources indicate that there were already several entrepôts on the west coast of the Malay Peninsula 2,000 years ago, but archaeological research has not yet established their exact locations. However, it has been verified that 1,500 years ago there were at least two entrepôts: one was sited in the Bujang Valley of South Kedah, and the other at Kuala Selinsing, Perak. They possessed several common features, including a heterogeneous population which fluctuated in size with the rhythm of the monsoons.
