The Cola attacks
In the early 11th century, the Tamil-controlled Cola kingdom of South India, a large maritime power of the time, embarked on a policy of imperial expansion in the northern Strait of Melaka. After conquering all the main Srivijayan centres, the Cola established their colonial capital at Kedah, which was viewed in ancient India as a significant commercial and political centre. Tamil influence over Kedah lasted no longer than a century, but Tamil cultural and religious influence left a strong imprint on Malay memories.
