Cave art at Gua Kelawar

Charcoal drawings of human, animal and abstract motifs occur at 14 sites in the limestone cave of Gua Kelawar in Perak.

The prehistoric peoples of Malaysia, in common with their Orang Asli contemporaries, left records of their activities in the form of crude and simple drawings on the walls and ceilings of limestone caves. These cave drawings are sporadic and rare: there are only four sites in Peninsular Malaysia, four in Sarawak and one in Sabah. The meanings behind the drawings have remained largely mysterious due to a lack of in-depth a research, while their future is also uncertain as they face natural as well as man-made agents of deterioration.
