Barter trade networks
Prehistoric barter trade in Malaysia may have evolved about 10,000 years ago when coastal and inland inhabitants began exchanging goods. Later, during the Neolithic period, the frequency of barter trade increased and long-distance overland exchanges between the Malay Peninsula and Thailand began. The early belief that Neolithic cultural changes were due to seaborne migrations is now obsolete. Some scholars now favour the theory that these changes came about through trade, and that maritime trade networks began about 500 BCE during the Metal Age.
