Shrews, rats and mice

Shrews (right) differ from rats (centre) and mice (left) in having a long, pointed snout projecting considerably beyond the lower lip, a lack of inciscor teeth and small, depressed ears.

Though it is only the few commensal species which are commonly seen, Malaysia's shrews, rats and mice make up about one-quarter of the total number of mammal species in the country; there are 9 shrew species, 10 treeshrew species, 27 rat species and 6 mouse species. Most are confined to the depths of the rainforest.
