Roundworms, tapeworms and flukes
Roundworms, tapeworms and flukes can all infect humans in Malaysia, as elsewhere, with a number of diseases such as clonorchiasis, schistosomiasis and filariasis. All can be found in animals and can infect people who eat food which is not thoroughly cooked. Roundworms also live in soil, water and plants, and so their eggs can enter humans on unwashed vegetables or even dirty fingers. Transmission to humans can be avoided by close attention to personal hygiene and the consumption of thoroughly cooked food.
