Otters, civets and mongooses

Lim Boo Liat

Otter

Small-clawed otter (Ambionyx cinerea).

Malaysia has four otter species, twelve civet species and seven mongoose species—a larger number of mongooses than any other country. They are all medium-sized mammals of similar shape which belong to three separate families of the order Carnivora. The main distinguishing features between the three groups are their muzzles and feet, but there are also differences in habit—civets and mongooses are nocturnal, otters diurnal—as well as habitat.
