Kingfishers and woodpeckers

Woodpecker

As well as their sharp beak with which to find food under the bark of the trees and also to make nesting holes, woodpeckers have specially adapted feet and tail feathers which enable them to cling to tree trunks.

Malaysia has 15 species of kingfishers and 26 species of woodpeckers and piculets. Though belonging to different orders, both groups are hole nesters and have feet specially adapted to their way of life. Kingfishers are never very far from water as fish is the main component of their diet and their nesting holes are often in river banks. Woodpeckers, on the other hand, utilize trees for both their food source and nesting sites.
