Conservation Malaysia is rated as one of the 12 megadiversity countries in the world because of its rich diversity of flora and fauna. Though the country has only 2 per cent of the total land area of the world, it has 6 per cent of the world's biodiversity. However, rapid development of recent decades has resulted in the reduction of important wildlife habitats, and has become the main cause of the endangered status of some of Malaysia's animals.
