Fiddler, soldier and hermit crabs

Peter K. L. Ng

Hermit crab

A hermit crab emerges from its outgrown shell, which has broken in two.

Malaysia’s very long coastline has extensive intertidal areas very rich in food resources, with plankton brought in by the incoming tide. There is an abundance of crabs on the boundary where the land meets the sea, including fiddler, ghost, soldier and sand-bubbler crabs belonging to the group Brachyura (‘true’ crabs) with four pairs of legs, as well as hermit and coconut crabs of the Anomura (‘false’ crabs) with three pairs of legs.
