Bedbugs, fleas and lice are all ectoparasites, living on the surface of their hosts, be they humans or other animals. Malaysia has one of the world's two bedbugs, 800 of the more than 1,500 species of fleas, and the common lice which afflict humans. Advances in medical research have lessened the threat from these parasites since the last outbreak of plague carried by the oriental rat flea in Peninsular Malaysia in 1928.
