Vegetables

A plant counts as a vegetable if its parts are eaten as an accompaniment to the staple food, which in Malaysia is rice. Over 100 species of plants in Malaysia are vegetables, cultivated either in farms or garden plots. Some native species can be found in the jungle, growing wild. Traditional vegetables, or ulam, are usually eaten raw, and have high nutritional as well as medicinal value. Tropical vegetables are grown by smallholders in the lowlands of Malaysia, while temperate species, such as cabbages and cauliflowers, are found in highland farms. Wild vegetables are collected for home consumption and sold in small, rural markets.
