Tuber crops
There has been a steady decline in the cultivation of tuber crops in Malaysia in favour of more economically successful crops such as rubber and oil palm. Although tuber crops only play a minor role as a staple food, they are widely used in their raw form in the production of snacks. Starch extracted from the tubers is useful in a host of other manufacturing industries too. Cassava is the most important tuber crop for starch processing, and continues to be grown both in large plantations and at subsistence level.
