The trunk: The backbone of a tree

Trees are plant species that have a thick, columnar woody stem, or trunk, from which branches grow. The presence of a trunk is what differentiates trees from shrubs, which are plants with no distinct trunk but with woody stems branching near the ground. In Malaysia's rainforests, trees make up most of the canopy and main storey layer, while shrubs dominate the shrub layer. The uses of trees are varied, from being wayside plants to a source of timber, food and medicine. Shrubs are popularly grown as ornamentals, especially those that flower abundantly and those with coloured leaves.
