Timber trees
The jelutung (Dyera costulata) is a huge magnificent tree that reaches a height of up to 60 metres.
In Malaysia’s forests, there are 3,000–5,000 tree species that belong to about 500 genera in 100 families. These trees are distributed from lowland to montane forests, with the majority in lowland, hill and lower montane forests. About 700 species reach timber size, attaining a diameter of 40 centimetres or more. Of these, about 400 species are harvested for their valuable timbers which are classified into different timber groups. Members of the dipterocarp family constitute the most important timber resource in Malaysia.
