Species richness and endemism
Malaysia is counted among the plant biodiversity hot spots of the world because of its tropical rainforests, which exhibit species richness not only at the community level but also at the family and genus levels. The flowering plant flora of Peninsular Malaysia is estimated to comprise over 8,500 species, while Borneo is even richer with about 12,000 species. The proportion of endemic species is also high, reaching 100 per cent in the Didissandra herbs.
