From the late 19th century, when it was introduced by the British, rubber has been a major crop in Malaysia. It has been cultivated on extensive plantations and smallholdings across the country. From the extraction of raw latex to the production of consumer products, a huge industry has been established, and rubber wood is now also an important timber source. Today, Malaysia is the third largest producer of natural rubber in the world.
