Rice

Hadzim Khalid and Othman Omar

Rice or Oryza sativa is indigenous to the region between the Himalayan foothills across to the northern parts of Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) and Laos. It has long been a staple in the Malaysian diet. The varieties of rice are numerous, as are the planting methods and uses. With modernization, means of production have changed, brought about by the breeding of new strains, more sophisticated irrigation facilities and machinery. Rice is cooked in a variety of different ways by the peoples of Malaysia, and plays an integral role in cultural and religious ceremonies.
