Plants and culture

Iban design

The leaf motif is a basic component of Iban design.

Tradition, religion and taboo are behind the cultural uses of plants. In Malaysia, the relationship between plants and culture is steeped in history, existing in different forms among the country's various ethnic groups. Flowers, spices and fruits make generous offerings and beautiful, scented decorations during important religious and cultural ceremonies. Each culture places its own significance on the plants it uses, which come from shape, smell and colour. Traditional festivals are still very much a part of Malaysian life, despite the many changes that have taken place in the country over the years.
