Palms
Palms grow widely in Malaysia. Of the six palm subfamilies, four are represented. Malaysia's indigenous palm flora comprises 398 species in 33 genera, although the total number of species is probably in excess of 420. In comparison, the tropical Americas, with an area 12 and a half times the size of Malaysia, have about 550 species in 66 genera. Palms grow in a variety of habitats, but are most diverse in lowland forest. They are used traditionally as food, medicine and as weaving and building materials.
