Oil palm

N. Rajanaidu

Malaysia is the world's largest producer and exporter of palm oil. First introduced as an ornamental plant in the 1870s, it only began to be commercially exploited in the early 20th century. Successful harnessing of technology in planting the crop and strict quality control during processing, storage and transportation, have contributed to the development of the oil palm industry into the multibillion ringgit success that it is today. Maintaining such productivity is crucially important for the hundreds of thousands of Malaysians who work on the oil palm estates or in associated industries.
